Queer Spaces. Safe Spaces. No room for hate.

I’d like to talk about the importance of safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. It's good to see more people becoming aware of the issues we face and standing with us. It's not enough to simply say that a place is safe - it's important to actively work to create a safe and inclusive environment through policies, procedures and training.

For many Queer individuals, the experience of discrimination, harassment, and violence is a daily reality. This can create feelings of anxiety and fear, making it challenging to navigate daily life. It is so important that we create safe spaces to help reduce these risks and support the well-being of individuals within the community.

As the owner of a Queer venue in Brighton, I care deeply about the safety of our customers. We have seen cases of harassment and discrimination happening around Brighton (yes, even in our wonderfully diverse Brighton) so we are very cautious about our customers' well-being.

We are uncompromising when it comes to creating a safe environment for our customers.

Recently some of our customers were being harassed with unkind and verbally abusive comments after they had left our venue. This behaviour is not acceptable and we need to put an end to it. It must stop.

If you're thinking this is not your problem, think again. It is. Safety is everyone's responsibility.

If you're thinking 'but what can I do to help?", you can start by

  • Educating yourselves.

  • Become aware of the issues that the Queer community faces

  • Listen to their experiences

  • Actively work to create an environment where everyone feels safe and supported

  • Promote inclusivity

  • Respect diversity

At Across Rainbows and Arcobaleno, we continue to fight against discrimination and hate crimes.

We continue to promote and create safe spaces.

We work, relentlessly, on creating a world where everyone feels accepted, respected, and valued for who they are.

We, at Across Rainbows, believe that every single one of us deserves to feel safe and accepted for who we are.

It's our responsibility to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.

"Our unwavering commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment is at the heart of our mission. We firmly believe that everyone deserves to feel valued and secure, and we will tirelessly work to ensure that the Queer community thrives. Together, we can create a place where all are welcomed and celebrated for who they are." Luciana Cousin - Founder and Owner of Across Rainbows.
